BIOGRAPHY

Gerry Coughlan competed in the men's 800 metres and the 3000 metres steeplechase at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games, having broken the national 880 yards record (1:56.2) at the inter-club championship at College Park in the same year.

From Youghal, County Cork, Coughlan was a lieutenant in the Irish Army who had come to prominence over the previous three years in middle-distance running. He was eliminated in the heat of the 800m and also competed in the steeplechase alongside Paavo Nurmi.
