Irish painter Jack Hanlon, born as John Thomas Hanlon, specialised in watercolors mainly for still-lifes and religious themes. He studied painting in Belgium, Spain and Paris and became an ordained priest at Saint Patrick's College, Maynooth. During the 1930s Hanlon frequently travelled for painting holidays to France. He also served in a number of parishes in the diocese of Dublin before he was appointed as Curate, Church of the Good Shepherd, Churchtown, Dublin, in March 1957, from which he retired in January 1967. He was then called Father Jack Hanlon. Fr. Jack was educated at Belvedere College, Clonliffe, UCD and was ordained in Saint Patricks college, Maynooth in 1939.
Hanlon painted mainly watercolors in pastel tones, mostly still lifes and religious subjects. Both paintings submitted in 1948 were oil paintings, The Jockeys with 76 cm x 64 cm, Preparing for a Day's Sailing with 61 cm x 76 cm. He exhibited again in 1952, this time Rugby Match, another oil painting.
