Mike Corcoran was Ireland's first ever C1 canoe slalom competitor at the Olympic Games, competing at Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996, where he finished tenth in the C1 event - the finest result by an Irish canoeist at those Games.
From Glasnevin in Dublin, Corcoran moved to Brookmont in Maryland in 1990 to train alongside members of the United States team on the Potomac River, a commitment that shaped his preparation for two Olympic campaigns. He competed internationally from the mid-1980s through the late 1990s and achieved a World Cup podium finish in 1993.
After retiring from competition he settled in the United States, where he runs a prosthetics business. The family's Olympic story did not end with him: his twin daughters Michaela and Madison, born in Houston in 2002 and raised paddling the Potomac from the age of five, both competed for Ireland at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games - Michaela in the C1 and Madison in the K1 - making the Corcorans one of the most remarkable multi-generational families in Irish Olympic history.
