About Rugby Sevens
Rugby sevens is a fast-paced, high-scoring version of rugby union, with seven players per side competing across two seven-minute halves. At the Olympic Games, teams contest a condensed tournament format, with pool and knockout matches played over a single weekend.
Ireland's men's team made their Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 before returning at Paris 2024. On the road to Paris, the team won gold at the 2023 European Games in Kraków-Małopolska, defeating Great Britain in the final to secure Olympic qualification. The women's team qualified for their first Olympic Games by securing automatic qualification through the 2022-23 World Rugby Sevens Series.
Paris 2024 marked a historic milestone as both Irish rugby sevens teams competed together on the Olympic stage for the first time.
