Kathy Baker
Rugby Sevens
BIOGRAPHY
Kathy Baker represented Ireland in the women’s Rugby Sevens tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where Ireland finished 8th in their historic first appearance at the Games.
Her participation was particularly remarkable given that she had suffered an ACL injury just nine months before the tournament, requiring an intensive rehabilitation programme to be fit for Paris. Baker is from Kilcloon, Co. Meath and attended King’s Hospital School in Dublin, where her first sporting love was hockey. A girls’ Sevens team started at the school in fifth year and she began playing alongside hockey before concentrating on rugby, winning representative honours at age-grade level.
She was identified through the IRFU X7s tournament, progressed through the Ireland Sevens pathway, and made her senior debut at the Kitakyushu Sevens in Japan in 2018. She plays for Blackrock College RFC. She was part of the squad that secured Olympic qualification in May 2023 with a 10-5 win over Fiji in Toulouse.
