BIOGRAPHY
Rory McIlroy represented Ireland in the men’s individual golf stroke play tournament at two Olympic Games, finishing tied 4th at Tokyo 2020 and tied 5th at Paris 2024.
His Tokyo near-miss was one of the most dramatic moments of the Games – he was involved in a seven-man playoff for the bronze medal, was eliminated on the second hole, and afterwards remarked: “I never tried so hard in my life to finish third.”
Born in Holywood, Co. Down, McIlroy grew up playing golf for Ireland through his junior and amateur career – a choice he carried into the Olympics, opting to represent Ireland rather than Great Britain as he was entitled to do as a Northern Irish athlete. He declined to play at Rio 2016 due to concerns about the Zika virus. From the age of seven he was a member of Holywood Golf Club and won the European Amateur Championship in 2006 at 17. He turned professional in 2007 and won his first major, the US Open, at 22. A six-time major champion, he completed the career Grand Slam at the 2025 Masters – becoming only the sixth golfer in history to win all four major championships.
He spent more than 100 weeks at world number one and won five consecutive Ryder Cup matches in 2023 as Europe reclaimed the trophy.
