BIOGRAPHY
Séamus Power represented Ireland in the men’s individual golf stroke play tournament at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games – Ireland’s debut in Olympic golf – finishing tied 15th with a total of 279 (rounds of 68-67-72-72).
He was briefly in medal contention after a second-round 67 that included an eagle on the 16th hole. Power grew up on the family farm outside Waterford, the youngest of three brothers. His mother passed away when he was eight years old, and his father Ned took on a second job to support the family while raising the boys. He began playing golf aged 11 and developed rapidly, coming to the attention of East Tennessee State University coach Fred Warren at the European Boys’ Team Championship in Italy, and accepting a scholarship to ETSU after Rory McIlroy – who had originally committed to the university – chose to turn professional instead.
Power won five times for ETSU including two Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, graduated with an accounting degree, and turned professional in 2011. He became the first Irish player to win on the Web.com Tour when he claimed the United Leasing & Finance Championship in May 2016, just months before the Games. He earned his PGA Tour card that year and went on to win his first PGA Tour event at the Barbasol Championship in 2021 and his second at the Bermuda Championship in 2022.
