JJ 'Jack' Lewis was the Commanding Officer of the Army Equitation School and one of the most significant administrators in Irish equestrian sport, who competed in the showjumping Prix des Nations at the 1948 London Olympic Games - the first appearance of showjumping under Irish colours at the Olympics. On Lough Neagh, Lewis had been clear over seven consecutive fences and held only twelve penalty points after the eleventh fence - with Ireland in contention for a team medal at that stage - when Lough Neagh twice refused at the twelfth fence. Lewis was disqualified after continuing to the thirteenth obstacle.
Colonel Jack Lewis was a longtime member and former commander of the Irish Army Equitation School. He was a member of the team that won the Aga Khan Trophy in 1946 alongside Dan Corry and non-Olympian Jack Stack. Along with Corry and Fred Ahern, Lewis was a member of the 1948 Irish Olympic equestrian jumping team and competed in both individual and team events. He later became the National Chairman of the Show Jumping Association of Ireland in the 1960s and later its first Director General in 1968, serving until 1970 when he stepped down due to poor health.
