Fionnuala McCormack is the first Irish woman to compete at five Olympic Games and Ireland's most capped female athlete in history, with more than 46 senior international appearances across a career spanning from 2003 to 2025. She won the European Cross Country individual title in 2011 and 2012 - becoming the first woman to defend that title - and team gold at the 2012 European Cross Country Championships, with further team bronze medals in 2014 and 2015.
She won bronze in the 3000 metres at the 2013 European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg, finished 12th in the steeplechase final at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, and placed fifth at the 2014 World Cross Country Championships. Her finest performance at a global championship came at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she finished ninth in the marathon at the age of 40 - the highest placing of her championship career, eighteen years after her World Championships debut.
She set a marathon personal best of 2:23:46 in December 2024, also at the age of 40. McCormack made her Olympic debut as Fionnuala Britton in the 3000 metres steeplechase at Beijing 2008, then competed in the 5000 metres at London 2012 and the marathon at Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. She is from Kilcoole, County Wicklow, and competes with Kilcoole AC.
