BIOGRAPHY

Bryan Keane represented Ireland in the men’s triathlon at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, finishing 40th with a time of 1:52:09. At 35, he was the oldest competitor in the men’s triathlon field.

His route to Rio spanned 24 years and included a serious setback in September 2010, when he was struck by a car while training near his home in Cork, shattering his kneecap and requiring ten weeks in a leg brace. Despite a determined effort to qualify, the injury cost him a place at the London 2012 Olympics. Keane began his sporting career as a runner and won a team bronze medal at the European Junior Cross Country Championships in 1999. He later focused on cycling, representing Ireland at national level, before combining all three disciplines in triathlon.

In 2013 he became the first Irishman to reach the podium at the Triathlon World Cup, finishing second in Ishigaki, Japan. He qualified for Rio 2016 as the 50th-ranked athlete after finishing 20th in the final qualifying race in Yokohama, Japan. He accumulated 23 top-ten finishes at elite ITU events across his career and held multiple Irish national titles in triathlon, aquathlon, and duathlon. He retired from international competition in 2017.
