BIOGRAPHY
Russell White represented Ireland in the men’s individual triathlon at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
His qualification story was one of the most dramatic of the Tokyo cycle – he raced in five competitions across five weeks on three different continents, and only secured his place when Denmark’s Andreas Schilling withdrew through injury, moving White up from 30th to a qualifying position. White grew up in Banbridge, Co. Down and first dreamed of being an Olympic swimmer, winning national championship medals with Lisburn City Swimming Club and playing hockey for Ulster at underage level before taking up triathlon at a Triathlon Ireland talent identification day in 2010. He made an immediate impact, winning the London Junior Elite Triathlon in his first season.
His best results included 11th at the Leeds World Triathlon Series in 2016 – the highest ever finish by an Irish male at World Series level – and silver at the Karlovy Vary World Cup in 2018, one of only three Irish triathletes to medal at World Cup level. He was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2019 and broke his collarbone in early 2020, making his Tokyo qualification all the more remarkable. He subsequently became an apprentice coach at the National Triathlon Centre at the University of Limerick.
