BIOGRAPHY

Jodie McCann represented Ireland in the 5,000 metres at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, finishing 20th in her heat with a time of 15:55.08.

Her Olympic debut came at the end of a breakout season in which she lowered her 5,000 metres personal best by almost a minute. McCann grew up in south Dublin, took up athletics at nine, and excelled in cross country at underage level, winning the Irish under-20 cross country title in 2019 and finishing first Irish runner at the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon the same year.

She attended Rathdown School and went on to study primary school teaching at the DCU Institute of Education, graduating in 2022. The turning point in her career came when she relocated to Australia, where she trained under three-time Australian Olympian Craig Mottram, taking advantage of dual nationality through her mother, who was born in Perth.

On returning to Ireland she was coached by her father Clark. She won the Irish national 5,000m title in June 2024 and qualified for Paris via the world rankings. Paris was a particularly significant Games for the McCann family, as her older brother Luke also made his Olympic debut there, competing in the 1,500 metres. Both siblings compete for Dublin City Harriers.
