John Hartnett competed in the men’s 5,000 metres at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, reaching the Olympic stage in a discipline that demands exceptional endurance and international-level speed.

His selection represented the culmination of years of dedicated distance running and placed him among the finest Irish 5,000 metre runners of his era.

The 5,000 metres at Munich was one of the most competitive in Olympic history, with world-class performers from east Africa, Europe and the Americas. Hartnett finished 12th in his heat in 14:34.6.
