Daniel Wiffen won gold in the men's 800 metres freestyle at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in an Olympic record of 7:38.19.
Five days later he added bronze in the 1,500 metres freestyle, becoming the first Irish man to win two Olympic swimming medals and the first Team Ireland athlete to win two medals at the same Games in 28 years. He also contested the 10 kilometres marathon swim at those Games, finishing 18th in his first open water race.
He is a double world champion, having won the 800 metres and 1,500 metres freestyle titles at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha. The 800 metres gold, in 7:40.94, made him Ireland's first world swimming champion. In December 2023 he broke the short course 800 metres freestyle world record with 7:20.46.
He has twice won Commonwealth Games silver in the 1,500 metres freestyle for Northern Ireland, at Birmingham 2022 and at Glasgow 2026.
Wiffen made his Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, winning his heat in the 800 metres freestyle in 7:51.65 to place 14th overall, and finishing 20th in the 1,500 metres in 15:07.69, both Irish records at the time.
