Shane Ryan reached the semi-finals of the 100 metres backstroke at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, finishing 16th overall, and has competed at three Olympic Games.
At Rio 2016 he also swam the 50 metres freestyle, placing 43rd, and the 100 metres freestyle, placing 40th. At Tokyo 2020 he contested the 100 metres butterfly, finishing 38th, and swam in the Irish 4x200 metres freestyle relay team that placed 14th. At Paris 2024 he swam in the 4x100 metres medley relay team that finished 11th.
Ryan grew up in the Philadelphia area. His father Thomas is from Portarlington, County Laois. He has won bronze medals in the 50 metres backstroke at the 2018 World Short Course Championships, the 2018 European Aquatics Championships and the 2019 European Short Course Championships, and took gold in the event at the 2017 Summer Universiade
