John Thomas was a member of the Ireland squad for the football tournament at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games, the first Games at which Ireland took part as an independent nation. Ireland reached the quarter-finals and placed equal fifth of 22 nations.

He is recorded in the Olympic Federation of Ireland's team lists as a member of the travelling squad.
