BIOGRAPHY

Darren Sutherland won a bronze medal in boxing at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in the middleweight division.

Sutherland was from Dublin and boxed out of St Saviour’s Olympic Boxing Academy, where he developed into one of Ireland’s leading amateur boxers. At Beijing 2008 he secured a podium finish with a series of victories before losing in the semi-final, contributing to a successful Games for the Irish boxing team.

He also represented Ireland at World and European Championships and won multiple national titles during his amateur career. Following the Olympics he turned professional and fought in the UK, recording an undefeated record. Sutherland died in 2009 at the age of 27 and is remembered as one of Ireland’s most gifted boxers.
