BIOGRAPHY

Edward “Eddie” Harty represented Ireland at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games in the three-day event. He finished 9th individually and 6th with the Irish team, competing as a 23-year-old rider.

Born in Dublin into a prominent racing and equestrian family, Harty later forged a successful career as a jockey in Britain and Ireland. His most famous victory came in the 1969 Grand National at Aintree, where he rode Highland Wedding to win by 12 lengths.

Following his riding career he returned to Ireland and became a successful racehorse trainer, remaining closely involved in the sport for decades.

He passed away aged 88 on February 11th 2026.
