BIOGRAPHY

John Caldwell won the bronze medal in boxing at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games in the flyweight division.

Caldwell was born in Belfast and began boxing at the Immaculata Club, where his talent was developed under trainer Jack McCusker.

Career highlights include becoming the world bantamweight champion in 1961 after defeating Alphonse Halimi at Wembley, as well as winning British and Commonwealth bantamweight titles during a professional career that included more than 30 fights.

He retired from professional boxing in 1965 after a career spanning amateur and professional competition and remained a prominent figure in Irish boxing until his death in 2009.
