BIOGRAPHY
Kathy McCandless competed in the women’s 5,000 metres at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, finishing 10th in her heat in 15:55.66.
A native of California, McCandless was offered athletic scholarships to several universities in her home state but instead enrolled at Princeton University in New Jersey, an Ivy League institution, where she opted out of athletics.
She moved to London in 1992, made a comeback to the sport, and represented the United States at the 1993 World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart. In London she trained with the Irish athletes managed by agent Kim McDonald and subsequently transferred her athletic allegiance to Ireland. She achieved the A qualifying standard at an international meet in Moscow in 1995 and her 3rd place finish in the 5,000 metres at the Irish national championships – ahead of Bríd Dennehy – earned her selection for Atlanta.
