Mark English

BIOGRAPHY

Three time Olympian, Mark English’s class as an 800m runner was franked early when he finished 5th at the World Junior Championships in 2012. Since then, he has earned five European medals: outdoor bronze in 2014 and 2022, indoor silver in 2015, and indoor bronze in 2019 and 2025.

Balancing athletics with academics, English pursued his medical studies at UCD while achieving top-level performances. He made his Olympic debut at Rio 2016, reaching the semi-finals with a strong showing in the heats. At Tokyo 2020, he competed again but narrowly missed advancing past the first round, highlighting the highly competitive nature of the event.

In preparation for Paris 2024, English put his medical career on hold, focusing entirely on athletics. His dedication paid off in June 2024 when he broke his own Irish 800m record twice in one week to secure Olympic qualification, before claiming his ninth national title at the Irish Championships. He went on to make the Semi Finals at the Paris Olympic Games.
