Niall O’Shaughnessy
Athletics
BIOGRAPHY
| Niall O’Shaughnessy was the first Irish athlete to attend the University of Arkansas under the legendary coach John McDonnell – blazing a trail that would be followed by Frank O’Mara, Paul Donovan, Niall Bruton and many others who became Olympic and world-class performers over the following two decades – and competed in the men’s 1,500 metres and 800 metres at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.
The smallest athlete in the 800m heat O’Shaughnessy had the modest starting point of a 1:55.4 800m personal best when McDonnell recruited him as a miler, having never raced the distance. In the 800m heat at Montreal he was badly bumped in a tactical race, finishing 5th in 1:49.29 and was eliminated. In the 1,500m he was unfortunate to be drawn in the more competitive of the opening heats, finishing 4th behind three athletes who made the final, including eventual bronze medallist Paul-Heinz Wellman, Ivo van Damme (silver) and Rick Wohlhuter (6th in final). |
