BIOGRAPHY
Tom Comyns represented Ireland in the men’s 4×100 metres relay at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games alongside John McAdorey, Gary Ryan and Paul Brizzel.
The Irish team ran 39.26 seconds in their heat and did not advance to the semi-finals. That time stood as the Irish national 4×100 metres relay record for 25 years until it was broken in June 2025.
Comyns is a graduate of the University of Limerick, where he holds a BA in Physical Education, an MSc in Motor Skill Acquisition and a PhD in Strength Training for Rugby Union, the latter funded by the IRFU.
Following his athletics career, he completed a PhD and worked as an S&C coach with Munster Rugby and the IRFU. Comyns became Head of S&C at the Irish Institute of Sport in 2012, leading S&C provision and strategy for Ireland’s Olympians and Paralympians. He later became Professor of Strength and Conditioning at the University of Limerick.
