BIOGRAPHY
Emmet Brennan represented Ireland in the men’s light heavyweight boxing event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he was eliminated in the round of 32 by world championship silver medallist Dilshodbek Ruzmetov of Uzbekistan.
His emotional interview after the bout, in which he spoke openly about the sacrifices made on the road to Tokyo, resonated widely with Irish audiences. Brennan trains out of St Saviour’s Boxing Club in Dublin, the same club as his idol Darren Sutherland, who won Olympic bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games before his tragic death in 2009.
He began boxing at ten but stepped away from the sport in his early twenties, before returning in his mid-twenties and committing fully to an Olympic campaign – quitting his job and taking out a Credit Union loan to fund his pursuit of qualification. He won Irish elite titles at 75kg in 2017 and at 81kg in 2019, before moving up to light heavyweight.
He qualified for Tokyo as the last Irish boxer to secure a place at the Games, winning a box-off against Sweden’s Liridon Nuha at the European qualifier in Paris in June 2021. He subsequently turned professional.
