BIOGRAPHY
David McCann won the Irish national road race championship three times, set a national record with six time trial championship victories, won the Tour de Korea in 2005 and broke Chris Boardman’s long-standing British 25-mile time trial record in 2009.
He competed at three Olympic Games, making his debut at Atlanta 1996, where he finished 73rd in the road race just five seconds behind Tour de France winner Miguel Induráin.
Born in Belfast, McCann was included in the Atlanta squad when a reserve spot became available and performed with panache in a race extended to 222 kilometres for the first time, allowing professionals to compete.
He was part of a three-man group chasing the leaders before being swallowed by the peloton.
He turned professional in 2001 and competed at Sydney 2000 and London 2012. He also won a Commonwealth Games team pursuit bronze with Northern Ireland at Delhi 2010.
