BIOGRAPHY
Mark Carroll competed in the men’s 5,000 metres at two Olympic Games.
From Knocknaheeney in Cork, Carroll grew up half a mile from open countryside and joined Leevale Athletic Club as a schoolboy, where his early talent was nurtured by Brother John Dooley at the North Monastery CBS. In 1991, aged 19, he won the European Junior 5,000 metres title in Thessalonica – the first sign of what was to come. He took up a scholarship at Providence College in Rhode Island in 1991 under coach Ray Treacy, becoming a six-time All-American and winning the NCAA Indoor 5,000 metres title in 1995. He should have competed at a third Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 but was forced to withdraw with a stress fracture.
His finest years came between the Olympics – he won bronze in the 5,000 metres at the 1998 European Championships in Budapest and gold in the 3,000 metres at the 2000 European Indoor Championships in Ghent, setting Irish national records in the 3,000 metres, 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres. He competed at six World Championships across his career and in 2002 finished 6th at the New York Marathon in 2:10:54, coming within 61 seconds of the Irish national record.
He is married to Amy Rudolph, a two-time US Olympian and former American record holder in the 5,000 metres. After retiring he moved into coaching, serving as Ireland’s distance coach at the 2010 European Championships and the 2012 London Olympics, before taking roles at Auburn University and Drake University and being appointed High Performance Coach of the Boston Athletic Association in 2019.
