Martina McCarthy competed in the women’s 4×400 metres relay at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

From Oranmore, Co. Galway, McCarthy was one of Ireland’s leading 400 metre runners in the early 2000s, recording a personal best of 53.52 seconds in 2001.

She was part of an Irish relay programme that was among the most competitive in the country’s athletics history, competing alongside Karen Shinkins, Joanne Cuddihy and others across a generation that produced several national record holders in the sprint events.
