Seamus Herron competed in the men’s road race at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games alongside Peter Crinnion and Sonny Cullen – Ireland’s return to Olympic cycling after a 32-year absence, made possible by a CRE-NICF joint agreement.

The 175km race was started in extreme heat of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. All three Irish cyclists remained with the main bunch for the first three circuits. A mechanical problem at the end of the fifth lap ended Herron’s race.
