BIOGRAPHY

Killian Collins represented Ireland as crew in the men’s Star class keelboat at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, sailing alongside helmsman Mark Mansfield and finishing 17th overall in the regatta held off Glyfada in the Saronic Gulf.

From Cork and a member of the Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven, Collins brought considerable physicality to the campaign – at 195cm and 102kg he was well suited to the demanding role of crew in the heavy Star keelboat. His partnership with Mansfield was built on years of campaigning together in the class, with Mansfield having previously won third place overall at the Star World Championships in 2000 with a different crew. Athens 2004 was Ireland’s first Olympic Star campaign since the class had been removed from and then restored to the Olympic programme.

After retiring from Star class sailing Collins pursued a career in technology, while remaining active in club keelboat racing at the Royal Cork Yacht Club, where he was named Keelboat Racing Sailor of the Year in 2024.
