Mark Mansfield competed in the Star class two-person keelboat at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games alongside Tom McWilliam, finishing 15th overall. Mansfield and McWilliam had qualified with a third place finish at the European Championships in the Star class and were early selections, identified in 1991 by the ISA as having realistic medal-winning prospects.

Their preparation included individual coaching and intensive work with foreign crews to evaluate tuning and handling techniques, and concluded with a two-week training camp near Barcelona. Team manager Michael Wallace described their regatta as ‘frustrating’ – the generally light winds that prevailed put them under pressure as the subtleties of sailing the demanding Star in light conditions had yet to match their heavy-wind prowess. In fresh winds, their ability to climb up the fleet was unmatched by other crews, but heavy-wind conditions did not occur often enough in Barcelona and the crew finished 15th – lower than predicted.

Mansfield went on to compete at Atlanta 1996 with David Burrows and later at Athens 2004 with Killian Collins, where they won bronze at the 2000 Star World Championships just before Sydney.
