BIOGRAPHY

Michael Carruth won the gold medal in boxing at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games in the welterweight division, becoming Ireland’s first Olympic boxing champion.

Carruth is from Dublin and developed his boxing career through the amateur system with the Drimnagh Boxing Club under coach Phil Sutcliffe. His Olympic victory came after defeating Juan Hernández Sierra of Cuba in the final, a landmark moment that helped establish Ireland as a major force in Olympic boxing.

Carruth won multiple Irish amateur titles and represented Ireland at major international championships before turning professional after the 1992 Games.

Carruth later remained closely involved in the sport as a respected coach and mentor to emerging Irish boxers.
