BIOGRAPHY
Jack Marley represented Ireland in the men’s 92kg heavyweight boxing event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, becoming the first Irish heavyweight to compete at the Olympics since Cathal O’Grady at Atlanta 1996.
He beat Poland’s Mateusz Bereznicki 4-1 in the round of 32, before losing in the quarter-finals 4-1 to 2022 Asian Games gold medallist Davlat Boltaev of Tajikistan. Marley began boxing aged eight at Monkstown Boxing Club in Sallynoggin, south Dublin, and won his first All-Ireland title at eleven. He was inspired in part by Katie Taylor, who visited his primary school after winning gold at the London 2012 Olympics. He also played soccer with St Joseph’s until his mid-teens. He was the second youngest national heavyweight champion in Irish amateur history when he won the title at 18 in 2021.
He was invited into the Irish elite training group in May 2021, shortly before his Leaving Certificate; during his early years in the programme he supplemented his income with jobs including landscaping and flower deliveries. He won gold at the European Under-22 Championships in 2022 and silver at the 2023 European Games in Kraków – the first Irish heavyweight to win a major international medal since Gearóid Ó Colmáin won the European title in 1947.
At 21 he was the youngest competitor in his division at Paris 2024.
