BIOGRAPHY
Dean Clancy represented Ireland in the men’s 63.5kg boxing event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he was eliminated in the round of 32.
He lost on a 3-2 split decision to Jordan’s Obada Al-Kasbeh, a three-time Olympian, despite Al-Kasbeh receiving a point deduction during the bout. Clancy began boxing at the age of eight under the guidance of his father Jason, who coached him throughout his career. He won seven successive Irish underage titles from 2013 and claimed silver at the European Junior Championships in 2017 and the European Youth Championships in 2018, the same year he represented Ireland at the Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, where he narrowly missed a bronze medal.
In 2021 he won gold at the European Under-22 Championships. He qualified for Paris 2024 by winning bronze at the 2023 European Games in Poland, where he lost to French world champion Sofiane Oumiha in the semi-finals. Clancy studied at the Institute of Technology Sligo and is also a talented visual artist, having achieved high marks in Art in his Leaving Certificate — a passion he inherited from his grandfather.
