Richard Coakley

Rowing

BIOGRAPHY

Richard Coakley represented Ireland in the men’s lightweight coxless four at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, finishing 4th in the B final – 10th overall – alongside Paul Griffin, Cathal Moynihan and Richard Archibald at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park.

From Skibbereen, Co. Cork, Coakley is the younger brother of Eugene Coakley, a two-time Olympian at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, and was trained under the legendary Skibbereen Rowing Club coach Dominic Casey – whose philosophy of “mileage makes champions” he has carried with him throughout his life.

The Coakley brothers were heroes to the next generation of Skibbereen rowers, including Gary and Paul O’Donovan, who have cited them as inspirations in their own journeys to Olympic gold. Richard emigrated to Sydney in 2011, and in 2014 rowed for Australia at a World Cup regatta before turning to coaching. He became head of rowing at St Catherine’s School in Sydney in 2018, transforming a programme of around 20 girls into a nationally competitive force by applying the same training principles he had learned from Dominic Casey – winning the junior women’s eight title at the 2024 Australian Rowing Championships and being named co-coach of the year.
