Denise Lyttle competed in the women’s Europe class one-person dinghy at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, finishing 12th overall in a fleet of 22 boats – with two of the better individual results achieved by an Irish sailor in Olympic competition: a second place in the first race and a third place in her sixth outing.

The Europe class made its Olympic debut at Barcelona 1992 as the first single-handed yachting event confined to women in Olympic history. From a sailing family – her brother Mark Lyttle also competed at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics in the Laser class, making them the first brother and sister to represent Ireland at Olympic sailing – Lyttle dedicated herself to full-time sailing for two years prior to Barcelona, driving to events across Europe with her craft in tow.

An 11th-place finish at the Women’s World Championship guaranteed her selection. She excelled in light wind conditions but struggled when the breeze increased. Her father Seamus compiled detailed wind and tidal charts of the Savannah racing area in preparation for the Atlanta Games. In May 1992, she secured her selection ahead of Aisling Bowman after a close competition.
