Tom Fitzpatrick represented Ireland as helmsman in the men’s 49er skiff at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games alongside crew Fraser Brown, finishing 16th overall in the regatta at the Agios Kosmas Olympic Sailing Centre.

From Howth, Co. Dublin, and a member of Howth Yacht Club, Fitzpatrick was one of Ireland’s most experienced 49er sailors of his era, having campaigned in the class across multiple World Championships before Athens. He and Brown worked for over three years to qualify Ireland for the Games, coming agonisingly close at the 2003 World Championships in Cadiz before finally securing their quota place at the 2004 Worlds in Athens – qualifying just months before the Games themselves began – coached by Ian Barker, who had won silver in the 49er at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Their opening four races at Athens placed them 11th overall, a promising start in one of the most technically demanding classes on the Olympic programme. After the Games Fitzpatrick continued to compete at the highest domestic level, winning the prestigious Allianz Irish Helmsman’s Championship – becoming the first Olympic 49er sailor ever to win the title.
