BIOGRAPHY
Austin O’Connor represented Ireland in the individual and team eventing at four Olympic Games – Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 – one of the most decorated and enduring careers in Irish equestrian history.
From near Mallow in north Cork, O’Connor grew up in a family that produced and traded sport horses and was hunting on ponies from an early age. He has been based at Attington Sport Horses in Oxfordshire since 1994, building an operation renowned for producing international horses. He won gold with Ireland’s Young Rider team at the World Championships in 1995 aged 19 – a first indication of his potential – and went on to represent Ireland at senior level more than eight times at European and World championships. A
t Sydney 2000 he rode Fabio to 17th individually – a horse sadly lost to a suspected heart attack at the European Championships at Punchestown three years later. At Beijing 2008, where the equestrian events were held in Hong Kong, he rode Hobby Du Mee to 21st individually and 8th as part of the team.
At Tokyo 2020 he stepped in as a late replacement when Cathal Daniels and Rioghan Rua were withdrawn on veterinary grounds just before the dressage phase, and produced one of the performances of his career: Colorado Blue was one of only six horses to jump clear inside the time across country, and O’Connor finished 13th individually – the highest Irish finisher. At Paris 2024, approaching his 50th birthday, he competed again on Colorado Blue at the eventing venue in Versailles. In the years between Tokyo and Paris his career reached new heights – he won the five-star Maryland Horse Trials in 2023, the first Irish victory at that level in 58 years, and finished third at Badminton twice, Ireland’s first podium finish at that iconic event in over 40 years.
