Maurice ‘Mossy’ Doyle was one of Ireland’s leading boxing prospects at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games, competing in the men’s featherweight division against Jackie Fields of the USA – the eventual gold medallist and the youngest Olympic boxing champion in history, winning the title at the age of sixteen years and 162 days.

Doyle, from Cork City, produced a performance that drew praise for his work in the second round, in which Fields did well to withstand the Irishman’s attacks and survive to take the verdict. Fields went on to become world professional welterweight champion in 1929.

Doyle was part of an Irish boxing squad thoroughly prepared by trainer Tansy Lee at Portobello Barracks, where intensive preparation and competition had the boxers sharp and match fit for Paris.
