BIOGRAPHY
John Joe “Johnny” Joyce represented Ireland in the men’s light welterweight boxing at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, winning his opening bout before losing to eventual gold medallist Felix Diaz of the Dominican Republic in one of the most controversial results of the Games.
Joyce defeated Hungary’s Gyula Kate 9-5 in the last 32, then met Diaz in the round of 16 in a bout that was scored 11-11 – and lost on countback. The decision drew widespread criticism at the time and was described as among the most dubious of the Irish campaign.
From Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, Joyce began boxing young under the guidance of his father John, who trained him and remained his closest supporter until his death in 2016. Joyce boxes from St Brigid’s Boxing Club in Mullingar and went on to win 15 Irish national titles and three European medals, including gold at the 2008 EU Championships at light welterweight. He subsequently turned professional. He later returned to Mullingar to serve as Head Coach of Mullingar Olympics Boxing Club, where he had first learned the sport. He was well known to a generation of Irish boxing fans as one of the brightest talents of his era.
