BIOGRAPHY

Michael “Mick” Clohisey represented Ireland in the men’s marathon at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, finishing 103rd with a time of 2:26:34.

His performance on the day was hampered by a foot infection stemming from a blister sustained during training in the build-up to the Games. Clohisey grew up in Clontarf in Dublin and runs for Raheny Shamrock AC. His introduction to marathon running came through his father Vinnie, who ran the Dublin Marathon three times, and who invited a young Mick to join him to run the final mile of the 1998 race.

He went on to win an Irish national cross country title in 2014 and the Vienna City Half Marathon in the same year. He transitioned to marathon running in 2015 specifically to qualify for the Olympics, securing his qualifying time at the Seville Marathon in early 2016. He was coached throughout his career by former three-time Dublin Marathon winner Dick Hooper, who first spotted his talent when Clohisey was part of the St Paul’s College team that won an Irish schools cross country title in 2003. He later won the Irish national marathon title in 2018 and the Belfast Marathon in 2021.
