Paul Buttimer

Boxing

BIOGRAPHY

Paul Buttimer competed in the men’s light-flyweight boxing at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, losing his opening bout to Nigerian boxer Moses Malagu by 8 points to 12.

From Cork and a member of Sunnyside Boxing Club, Buttimer’s struggle to make the weight limit was complicated by a knee injury that had interfered with his training schedule, and the combination of the weight management difficulties and the injury destroyed his prospects in Barcelona.

He had qualified for the Games through the standard international qualification route and was a respected member of the Irish boxing team during a golden era for the sport.
