Gerry Hawkins competed in the men’s light-flyweight boxing at two consecutive Olympic Games – the 1980 Moscow Games and the 1984 Los Angeles Games – reaching the quarter-final stage on each occasion.

A member of Holy Trinity Boxing Club in Belfast, he had reached Olympic standard despite a chronic lack of quality opposition at both domestic and international level.

At Moscow 1980, he lost a unanimous decision to Bulgaria’s Ismail Mustafov – an opponent who subsequently became one of the most decorated amateur boxers in history: winning the World Championship in 1982, four European amateur titles and, competing as Ivaylo Marinov, the light-flyweight gold medal at the Seoul 1988 Olympics. He later described his Moscow defeat as deeply disheartening despite the intensity of his preparation, which had involved three training sessions per day.

At Los Angeles in 1984, Hawkins lost on a 5-0 unanimous decision to Italy’s Salvatore Todisco – who advanced all the way to the final before withdrawing with a broken thumb, allowing Paul Gonzales of the USA to take the gold medal by walkover.
