James ‘Jim’ Montague

Boxing

BIOGRAPHY

Jim Montague competed in the men’s light-welterweight boxing at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, winning his opening bout with a technical knockout before being outpointed by Ray ‘Sugar Ray’ Seales of the USA – the eventual gold medallist.

A bus conductor from Belfast and a member of the Star Club, Montague began his campaign with a TKO when the referee stopped his opening bout with Nosra Vakil Monfard of Iran.

His next contest brought him up against the super-confident, southpaw Seales, whose favourite weapon was a right uppercut. Seales proved too strong for Montague, who survived two standing counts in the second round. Seales went on to win the gold medal.
