BIOGRAPHY
Anna Merveldt (later Merveldt-Steffens) competed in the individual dressage at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, delivering what as her ‘best test ever on Rapallo’ – a performance that resulted in an 11th-place overall finish and which has not been equalled by an Irish specialist in Olympic dressage competition.
Born in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, but moved to Ireland as an infant with her father Paul and mother Countess April Merveldt shortly after her birth, Anna grew up initially in Templeogue, Dublin, where her father managed a thoroughbred stud, and later in Colbinstown, Co. Kildare, where he oversaw the Ballylea Stud. She moved to Germany in her late teens and began to specialise in dressage, being chosen to ride for Ireland shortly after the formation of the Irish Dressage Society. She rode the 17-year-old Dutch-bred gelding Rapallo at Barcelona, a horse loaned to her by Dr Erwin Becker, a well-known German equestrian veterinary specialist. Legendary German coach Johann Hinnemann agreed to train Merveldt on the condition that he travelled to Barcelona as her Chef d’Equipe.
She qualified for the final round in 16th place with 1,527 points, then improved to 11th in the final round with 1,355 points – one of the finest individual equestrian results in Irish Olympic history.
