BIOGRAPHY
Brenda McGrory competed in the women’s 100 metres butterfly at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
At the Games, McGrory produced the finest performance of the Irish swimming group by setting a new Irish record of 1:08.5 – a time that would have placed her 10th at the Mexico 1968 Games.
She also helped the women’s 4x100m medley relay team set a national record, despite the squad including an 800m freestyle specialist.
McGrory is also remembered for her vivid description of the atmosphere in the Olympic Village in the aftermath of the Munich Massacre: ‘A stillness came over the place afterwards and I do remember there was an eerie feeling. It was a stunned silence really …’
