Miriam Hopkins

Swimming

BIOGRAPHY

Miriam Hopkins competed in the women’s 200 metres butterfly at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, finishing an off the pace behind the heat winner in the opening round. Hopkins finished in the bottom third of her competition – a reflection of the significant gap between Irish swimming standards and the international level at the time, particularly against the dominant East German and American programmes. Team manager Larry Williamson identified insufficient international experience, inadequate fitness training and lack of exposure to 50-metre pool competition as the primary factors.
