Swimming

BIOGRAPHY

Christine Fulcher competed in the women’s backstroke events at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games as the dominant Irish backstroke swimmer of her era.

Fulcher winning three successive national titles in both the 100m and 200m backstroke prior to Munich and chopping 7.5 seconds off the 200m championship record. At the Games she competed in both the 100m and 200m backstroke, swimming her fastest-ever 200m backstroke at Munich. As one of the standout performers of the Irish swimming team, Fulcher’s sustained excellence across both distances in the national championships had firmly established her as Ireland’s leading backstroke swimmer of her generation.
