Lucy Rock
Rugby Sevens
BIOGRAPHY
Lucy Rock (formerly Mulhall) captained Ireland in the women’s Rugby Sevens tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games – Ireland’s historic first appearance in the women’s event – where the team finished 8th.
Her tournament was cut short by a knee injury sustained in Ireland’s second pool match against South Africa, a cruel end to a decade-long campaign to reach the Games. Rock grew up in Tinahely, Co. Wicklow and was Player of the Match when Wicklow won the 2011 All-Ireland Junior football final before switching to rugby sevens. She was studying science at Trinity College Dublin when she received an invitation to sevens trials in 2014 and was one of the original 19 players contracted when the IRFU professionalised the programme.
She captained Ireland throughout their first Olympic qualification campaign in Kazan in 2015 and remained captain for the decade that followed. In January 2024, just weeks after her wedding, she led Ireland to their first ever SVNS Series title win in Perth. She scored 812 points in 213 World Series appearances.
She retired from sevens after Paris having also won four caps for Ireland’s XVs side.
