Paul Douglas

Boxing

BIOGRAPHY

Paul Douglas competed in the men’s heavyweight boxing at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, reaching the quarter-finals in what Dr Tom Hunt describes as a performance that surpassed expectations, winning two bouts before losing to triple European champion Arnold Vanderlijde of the Netherlands.

From Belfast, Douglas dominated the Swedish champion John Pettersson 8-1 in his first bout and secured a superb victory against the Russian champion Aleksey Chudinov 15-9 in his second before his quarter-final against Vanderlijde was stopped in the early stages of the first round. His two victories established him as one of the more successful members of the Irish boxing team at those Games and a genuine medal contender before his quarter-final exit.
