Samuel ‘Sam’ Storey

Boxing

BIOGRAPHY

Samuel Storey competed in the men’s light-middleweight boxing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Sam lost his opening bout to Italian Romolo Casamonica – a boxer described as ‘the Italian gypsy’, who executed what Dr Tom Hunt describes as ‘a demolition job’ in the third round after Storey had shaded the opening round with his jab. Storey danced around the ring in the first round, flicking out stinging right jabs to Casamonica’s face before his escape routes were cut off. The Italian then landed heavy punches to the head and body before the referee stopped the contest in the third round.

Despite the unanimous decision of the judges, Casamonica went on to reach the medal rounds, reflecting the quality of the opposition Storey faced.

The Irish boxing team at LA was based at Lake Placid, New York for a pre-Olympic training camp – the first properly organised camp in Irish Olympic boxing history.
